Man United vs Roma LIVE: Champions League score and updates with Michael Carrick on brink

22 mins: United fans are throwing their gold and green balloons onto the pitch. Looks like it’s part of the orchestrated protest against the ownership. Then again, it might just be the closest thing to hand for fans wanting to express their anger at the players.

19 mins: Oh my word, Roma were nearly just in for three. It’s given away and played to Malen in the box, but it runs just behind him.

Ayden Heaven, however, can’t clear and Roma have another chance – this time it’s blocked.

United eventually hoof it up and Fernandes and Soule start getting into it in a United corner. Both are booked. This is falling apart for the hosts. Calamitous.

Donyell Malen steps up… and he was always going to score in his form.

It is the nightmare first 20 minutes.

It goes from bad to worse!

Once more, Man United are opened up by that same pass into Soule on the right.

They initially get the tackle but give it away seconds later, and as Soule shoots, Ayden Heaven blocks it with his arm.

14 mins: United look to respond immediately as they move it down the right, flashing it across goal with Cunha coming in at the back post – but it’s dealt with by Roma.

And just like that, Man United are opened up!

It’s the same old problem again for Michael Carrick’s side as Kobbie Mainoo loses the ball on halfway. United are so open and it just takes one pass across the pitch to find Matias Soule, who slots past Senne Lammens.

7 mins: First glimpse of Malen as he receives the ball and darts towards the box. For a second it looks like he has the beating of Maguire but he’s crowded out by red shirts in the end.

Nothing exhilarating yet but United have started pretty spritely.
